A:Just like hard-drive MP3 players such as Apple's iPod or Microsoft's Zune are dependent on breakthroughs in hard-drive technology, Flash-based MP3 players such as the iPod Nano or the Creative Zen V Plus are fundamentally tied to the limitations of Flash memory technology.Currently, Flash memory manufacturers such as Toshiba and SanDisk offer only 8GB memory modules as their highest-capacity memory. This will change as Flash memory manufacturers make breakthroughs toward creating higher-capacity memory chips (Toshiba has already announced a 16GB memory module due out late this year).
One thing to consider is that many Flash-based players, such as the Cowon D2 or the SanDisk Sansa e280 offer an SD expansion card slot. With an SD-expandable 8GB Flash MP3 player capable of supporting one of the latest 8GB SD memory cards, it's possible to expand a Flash-based MP3 player to a total of 16GB. Those SD cards can be pricey, however.
